Swim Call!

Today, we had swim call. It was lots of fun to jump off the flight deck of the boat, 25 feet above the water, into the impossibly blue waters of the Med. I overcame my morbid childhood fear of swimming in really deep water mostly by ignoring whatever was beneath me. And whatever was below me responded in kind, leaving my poor exposed feet alone, whatever its temptations toward the opposite may have been. If you want to see pictures of my jumping in, e-mail me at shinnphoto@gmail.com or ashinn@cgcbear.uscg.mil.

Later we had a barbecue on the flight deck, then I spent the rest of the night uploading 45 high-resolution images to Coast Guard Headquarters at impossibly slow connection speeds. The good news, for you, though, is that you can see many of my images from this week at http://www.fredsplace.org/images/bear. Two of them are some of my favorite pictures so far from the deployment. See if you can guess which ones they are in the comments below. I’ll respond with another exclusive picture to the winner.

Happy guessing and good night,
Andrew

  1. Andrew: The Bear in full view as it passes by and the stern of the Bear after it has passed. Right?!!!!

  2. l. Jason Yonk (2nd picture)
    2. Wireless head set inside the ship.
    3. T Palmeira = standing in the light reflection
    4. The 4 men in the small boat, training operation.

O.K. I still like the picture of the ship. with the ocean waves and the tiny cloud.

  3. Andrew: Loves the picture of you abandoning ship. Great photography!!!

    You need a tan!!!!! Ha!!!!!

  4. Grandma,

That was 4 guesses! In fairness to everyone else guessing, I’ll ask you to narrow it down to 2, then I’ll tell you if you were right. Happy Sunday!

    Love you,
    Andrew

  5. I think I know! The picture with Fernandez–the one with the reflection of the ship in his sunglasses. I thought that was pretty cool, even if I’m wrong 😉

    Have a good Sunday, Andrew!

  6. My guess was the same as Andrew’s. I tried typing out a response on the Treo at Brian’s game, but it didn’t work. So, I vote in agreement with Andrew. Nice photo! 🙂

  7. As the only “elder” person voting, I reserve the right to 4 votes. Age has its priveleges!!!!! I like the one with the reflection in the sunglasses also, but I still like the one of the ship Bear as it cruises past the picture taking point!!!!!!!

  8. Ok, Mommy Girl is weighing in on the voting. Andrew, from what you have taught me about your skill and art, I vote for 3: Number 1 pick: Alex driving the Cub with the Cutter Bear in reflection (that is an awesome shot. I bet his mom or significant other loves that one!) Number 2 pick: Again, Alex driving the Cub, able to read the USCG in the picture on the back of his jacket and the Bear off to the side. (like the view of John Adams from his wife’s view in Quincy, that is a great thing you taught me, a picture from the subject’s viewpoint.) Number 3 pick: the picture of Petty Officer 1st Class (SK) Derrick Cross going over his job with the man with the eyes. It’s the eyes that you captured in that photo, the eyes are the mirror of the soul and you captured that here. There you have it….. If your Grandma gets 4 votes, I get 3, however, I picked mine in order of my vote. Love, Mom

  9. Andrew, I have one more comment. Your bio at Fred’s place is most interesting. And I love the picture. Who took that fabulous picture of you? Love, Mom

  10. Grandma,
Okay, I’ll allow your “shotgun-style” votes (spreading the options to increase your chances of hitting the right ones). We’ll see if you’re right.
    Mom,
Good guesses and great memories. I’m glad you guys liked the photo of the glasses; I’m always looking for one of those that will work out. The angle and the right amount of light just happened to coincide with the subject while I was in the right position: It’s probably my favorite ‘sunglasses’ picture yet (I’ve tried a lot of them that didn’t work).
The bio was Fred’s idea (Fred of Fred’s Place). I wanted to share just a few of the cool things I’ve done as a PA to lend credibility to the photo essay. Lisa took my portrait; she’s quite a shooter in her own right! I post-processed it, but the capture itself was hers.
Good guesses and great reasoning behind them! I’ll wait just a day or two more. Feel free to continue speculating or commenting on the pictures in general; I love your feedback! Telling me why you do or don’t like a picture helps me be a better visual communicator.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  11. Dear Andrew, I knew that your lovely wife took the photo, dramatic photo, dashing subject!!! Love, Mom

  12. Glad to hear that you took the plunge!
I remember trying to convince you that there were no sharks below the 5-foot mark in the Anacortes indoor public pool when we were 7.
BUT, I do have to say, it honestly is almost scarier when you CAN see the bottom. You’re constantly looking to see what’s down there. The dirty Pacific is a bit more comforting. Out of sight…
